On Friday Pete and Karen over at Uborka put out a plea for guest bloggers for the coming weeks due to a change in Karen's job meaning a decrease in the hours she will be able to spend online. I saw this and thought "Ohhh - wow! I could do that!" - so I perhaps a little over-enthusiastically volunteered myself. I am now regretting this upon seeing the other volunteers who include him, him and him. It's just little old me in the middle of such outstanding writing ability. Gah. I shall just stay quiet and leave Graybo to his beer and Vaughan to his obfuscation.

We had 10 players for 75 minutes of the game - one of our strikers pulled her hamstring 5 minutes in. Fortunately we were already 0-1 up when she went off and we just seem to carry on from there.. It was bitterly cold though - around 2 degrees when we kicked off. The score was 0-2 at half time, Kettering had only had one shot on our goal. We really need to win the rest of our games to get a decant end to the season, although we do have the cup semi final coming up at the end of March.
Again I started, finished and played on the right wing so things really are looking good!

Just noticed the bizarrely named "Institute for Visual Culture". I say bizarrely named because it is a barely disguised black portakabin thoughtfully placed about 2 metres to the left of the Fitzwilliam Museum, within it's grounds. The Fitzwilliam is a glorious building of very impressive architecture, the portakabin looking slightly out of place. Visual Culture? A Portakabin?

Quite disappointing in some respects- we were 2-1 up with 5 minutes to go then we failed to clear a corner and their no. 8 (I think) headed it in. Ah well we didn't go into the game expecting much from them so I'm happy with a point.

Escape from the Floppy Disks

As part of my Duke of Edinburgh Award I have to do community service and for the last few weeks this has involved formatting numerous floppy disks (not much you may think but it's rather mundane!). I have just labelled the last one and put it away. Now I can get on with my life.
Yes I know this is a little odd and it was only formatting floppy disks but my god was it tedious. I guess it wouldn't be 'service' if I enjoyed it too much, though. However, I think I may scream if ever asked to format a floppy disk again. No make that if I ever see one again.

I mentioned that my new Palm was buzzing a while back - well, today I finally got it sorted out and was given a new one as it was under guarantee. Frustratingly I had forgotten to transfer some of my contacts from the old palm onto my new computer so I have lost some of my addresses! Haven't had a chance to play with the new one yet - let alone begin the laborious task of transferring the needed files to it. Ah well. Least I didn't have to pay for anything!

The recent absence of anything interesting here is for a reason. Honest. I've been preparing my PC for the switch over from Windows 98SE to Windows XP. Oooh. The excitement. Well yes I was extremely excited this morning when I finally got XP running and spent a joyous hour or two discovering what was new. All was rosy until I tried to connect to the internet. Bloody XP doesn't recognize my modem. Hmph. Apparently it's too old. Pah.
So luckily I still had 98SE on a secondary Hard Drive and was able to boot from that to get online. I really haven't got the patience to work out what I should now do. Is it really necessary to go out and buy a new modem?

Snowy Pointlessness

Wonderfully pointless day. I think it was always going to be an odd day as It started with me sitting bleary-eyed and somewhat confused in front of my computer at the un-godly hour of 0630 watching for weather updates on the P's homepage - the page was set to auto-refresh every 30 seconds - I think I may have killed off what few brain cells I had left obsessively watching this auto-refresh - waiting for the words "The School is closed today due to snow" to appear on the front page. Not altogether sure why I bothered struggling into The P today, wasn't as if many others did. I spent the morning doing anything but something productive while at the same time trying not to catch hypothermia- the result of one too many over-enthusiastic snowball fights. I did find time in the middle of this pointless morning to do something vaguely cultural - although I think Roman Polanski's Macbeth was perhaps a little to gruesome for my liking. As the day finished early we all traipsed off to Pizza Hut for an "All you can eat" buffet lunch. Bad Idea. After having eating roughly the equivalent of 3 pizzas I now must diet for the foreseeable future. Ag. But the chocolate just looks so good.

Apologies for the lack of recent activity - have been somewhat preoccupied by the ever expanding hole in the garden, a (somewhat belated) Family Christmas, the imminent arrival of a new gadget, reading a good book( in preparation for an upcoming project), the TV Christmas Specials, backing-up my PC, and frantic jogging etc.. in a last ditch attempt to have some kind of decent fitness level when my football season recommences on Jan 17th.

Despite my dislike for Leeds United Football Club I was greatly saddend to see this article. Even though this is an extreme case it highlights just how serious the financial situation in football is at this present time. Supposedly premierships clubs wouldn't be affected by the cash crisis. If those in the premieship can indeed be affected then how bad will the already dire situatuon become in lower divisions? Will we even have the football league in a few years time? I sincerely hope so.

So near but yet so far

The qualification for Euro 2004 of Wales and perhaps more so Scotland looked so promising after their respective matches on Saturday.
Tonight, however both teams failed in their quest to reach a major finals. (but by a considerably different margin I might add). Wales losing 1-0 (1-0 on aggregate) and Scotland 6-0 (6-1 on aggregate). This was, I think particularly hard for Wales who in front of a record crowd of 73,800 missed out on qualifying for their first major finals for 45 years - their last being the 1958 world cup. They did so well earlier in the qualifying campain to beat Italy, and finish a deserved second in their group whereas Scotland had a dissapoiting qualifying campaign, even being held to a draw by the Faroe Islands in their first game! I watched the Wales game myself and thought that despite the luck not appearing to be with Wales, they appeared to lack the edge, the final ball always falling short of what was needed and also expected.
